RAMANATHAPURAM: Thousands of devotees took a holy dip in the sea off Rameswaram on the occasion of ‘Adi Amavasai’ on Friday.
The devotees, who came from different parts of the country and stayed overnight in and around the Ramanathaswamy Temple, visited the ‘Agnitheerthakadarkarai’ in the early morning and offered special pujas to their forefathers. Several hundreds of devotees, including women and children, stood in queue for hours together to take holy bath at the 22 theerthams.
Since the formation of solar eclipse coincided in the afternoon on Friday, the pilgrims wanted to complete the bath and puja in the morning itself.
Earlier, the idols of the temple’s presiding deity, Sri Ramanathasamy, and Lord Siva were brought to the ‘Agnitheerthakadarkarai’ in a procession for special pujas and abhishekams. Some devotees donated cows to the temple. The police said tha tthe total number of devotees visited this year could be more than a lakh. Pilgrims, who reached on Thursday night, found it difficult to get accommodation.
The other holy seafronts in the district such as Sethukarai, Dhanushkodi, Muhuntharayar Chathiram and Devipattinam also received a large number of devotees.
