Kozhikode: Syed Ummer Baffakki Thangal, the former State treasurer of the Indian Union Muslim League, died at a private hospital in Kozhikode on Friday. He was 87. Ummer Baffakki Thangal, a resident of Koilandi, was one of the highly respected leaders of the IUML. He is survived by his wife and nine children. Union Defence Minister A. K. Antony condoled the death of the Thangal. In a message released in Kochi, he said the Thangal had made great contributions to the religious amity in the State. He had also strived for the uplift of the backward and minority communities, he said. — Special Correspondent
