Aadi celebrations
Car festival of Andal Temple in Srivilliputtur
Aadi Pirappu: The first day of Aadi is typically celebrated by Tamilians as Aadi Pirappu. These festivals are traditionally celebrated but have no religious sanction. People visit temples to invoke God’s blessings.
Aadi Krithigai: This is a significant festival dedicated to Lord Muruga or Subramaniya. Devotees carry flower Kavadis on Aadi Krithigai day.
Aadi Amavasai: This is the new moon day and is devoted to ancestors. Many people fast on this day and take a holy dip in lakes, rivers and seas.
Aadi Perukku: August 2nd - this is celebrated on the 18th day of Aadi. `Perukku’ means rising - indicating the rising water in rivers.
Women cook different forms of rice as an offering and set off to see the surge of the first waters of the river pounding against the banks.
The festival is a form of nature worship. Special food is prepared on this day and family and friends get together and pray for continual supply of water and a good harvest.
In some communities, the bride’s parents invite their son-in-law and gift new clothes.
Aadi Puram: August 4th - This day commemorates the birth of Sri Andal who is supposedly an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi.
Andal is also known as the Saint Poet who wrote Tiruppaavai. People visit Amman temples and pray to Andal.
Varalakshmi Pooja: This pooja is performed by women during this month; they fast for the welfare of their family.
