CHENNAI: This year’s Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar Birthday Commemoration Award for outstanding contribution to the growth of Tamil will be conferred upon V.C. Kulandaisamy, chairman of the Tamil Language Development Board. Announcing this here on Thursday, secretary of the Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust AR. Ramaswamy said a selection committee, comprising P.R. Gokulakrishnan, former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; S. Ratnavel Pandiyan, former Supreme Court Judge; and Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adigalar, had chosen Mr. Kuladaisamy. The award, consisting of Rs. 1 lakh, will be given away at a function scheduled for August 5.
Mr. Ramaswamy said the trust was giving Rs. 40,000 to six deserving students (three boys and three girls), who secured the highest marks in Plus-Two examinations, till they completed their college education to meet their expenses. It was helping educational institutions buy furniture, notebooks and uniforms, besides financing Tamil scholars for publishing their writings.
