Major schemes have been approved and funds earmarked: Assurances Committee

MADURAI: With many mega projects such as IT Park and Textile Park sanctioned for Madurai by the Central and State governments in the last two years, the district and its peripheries were all set to witness a robust growth during the next two to three years, said Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Assurances Committee chairman S. Peter Alphonse here on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons after inspecting various ongoing works here, he said that major schemes/plans had been approved and funds earmarked by the governments. Once the works were initiated, the growth of economy in this region would be phenomenal.

The rail over-bridge work at Sellur, which was aborted suddenly, would be revived shortly, he said.

Due to various reasons, the project, taken up in 2001, could not be completed as per schedule. However, the district administration had worked out modalities and shortly, after re-tendering, it would become functional, he said.

Land measuring 112 acres had been acquired for the proposed textile park near Vadipatti at an estimated cost of Rs. 87.86 crore. The project, when completed, would provide employment to about 7,000 persons and give a fillip to the industry, he said.

Similarly, works were under way to create infrastructure for five IT companies who had been allotted space. The district administration was taking steps to acquire about 2,480 acres of land near Tirumangalam for establishing an industrial estate by the SIPCOT, he added.

The committee would impress upon the State Government the need to modernise the Aavin plant here to international standards, Mr. Alphonse said. In fact, the Aavin had performed well and earned a profits of Rs. 5 crore last year.

Collector S. S. Jawahar, MLAs M. R. Sundaram, Vidiyal S. Sekar, K. Murugavel, N. Nanmaran, K. S. K. Rajendran and Assembly officials were present.
