Staff Reporter
A leakage in the cylinder tube led to a burst of fire which spread when lead stored in a container spilled over
CHENNAI: Four persons were injured, one of them seriously, after a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder burst in a scrap metal shop on Giriappa Road, T. Nagar, on Tuesday night.
The four men, all hailing from Thalagnaayiru village in Nagapattinam district, were working at the scrap metal shop owned by one Syed.
On Tuesday night the workers were cutting an iron plate when the accident occurred. A leakage in the cylinder tube led to a burst of fire which spread when lead stored in a container spilled over. Mano (21), who was working nearby, suffered serious injuries. Three other workers, Rajamanickam (28), Ramesh (19) and Raja (18), who were further away, also sustained injuries.
Mano, who suffered 75 per cent burns, was rushed to Government Kilpauk Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
The other three were treated as outpatients in the Government Royapettah Hospital and were sent home on Wednesday morning.
The Pondy Bazaar police have registered a case of accidental fire and are investigating.
