‘Burglar’ caught after attempting suicide

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: An alleged burglar attacked police constable with a knife and threatened to end his life by inflicting injury on himself before he was caught near Salar Jung Museum on Wednesday.

He was later identified as Habeeb Mohammed, who used to burgle houses in old city, Mirchowk Inspector R. Rajeswara Rao told reporters. Mohammed was travelling on a two-wheeler when a police party intercepted him during routine vehicle checking near Salar Jung Museum. Failing to answer queries, he revealed his identity and eventually admitted to have committed nearly 50 burglaries in the past two years. “Just when a constable Srinath moved forward to take him into custody, Mohammed suddenly whipped out a knife,” the Inspector explained.

The burglar inflicted a bleeding injury on the constable’s hand and held the knife to his throat threatening to end his life if the police stepped forward. But Mr. Rao and his men rounded up Mohammed and managed to overpower him even as he inflicted an injury on himself with the knife.

He was later taken to a hospital and treated for the wound. Hailing from Balapur of old city, Mohammed was the eighth of 10 siblings. Except the eldest, all his eight brothers were allegedly involved in one or the other property-related crime cases reported in the city.

Soon after burgling a house, he used to pass on the stolen jewellery and cash to his sister Sayeeda, mother Ayesha and niece Jabeen.
