Noted women scientists have been invited as speakers The event is part of golden jubilee celebrations VISAKHAPATNAM: The St. Joseph’s College for Women in the city, celebrating its golden jubilee, has picked up the issue of under-representation of women in science, particularly at the senior levels of teaching and research in India and has decided to conduct a one-day UGC-sponsored regional conference on “Women in Science” on August 2. Women in science comprise only a small percentage of the total number of working women in Indian and there are only a few women scientists in enviable positions in scientific organisations. Though there is no explicit discrimination against women, talented women suffered due to the unsupportive institutional structures operating as powerful forces against them, the college representatives said at a press conference while giving details of the conference and the idea behind hold the same, here on Wednesday. The conference would assess the status of women in science, engineering and technology; discuss and develop strategies for enhancing women’s participating in these areas; gather the latest research findings and indicate future research areas. HoD of Office Management Department Ramani Dhanraj, faculty members P.S. Annapurna, P.K. Jayalakshmi, N. Gayatri Devi and coordinator of the conference N.R. Jeevan Babu spoke at the press conference. InvitationsSome noted women scientists were being invited for the conference to provide an inspiration through their lectures and discussions on the themes like strategies for enhancing women’s participation, current perspectives in scientific employment, recent research by women and women in higher education in AP. Director of NSTL V. Bhujanga Rao would inaugurate the conference and among the scientists participating are former Director of NIN and a nutrition scientist Mahtab S. Bamji, representative of DST Vinita Sharma, nuclear scientist G. Rohini Devi, agriculture scientist S. Sarala, marine scientist Pratibha Rohit, biotechnologist K. Uma Devi and home science professor Suguna Kannan. The college is conducting a number of programmes as part of the golden jubilee celebrations during this year. National seminarA national seminar on sustainable development: rethinking environmental initiatives will he held during September, an international seminar on towards healthier nation: inspiring optimal lifecycle strategies in January, several academic and cultural programmes, a youth festival, etc., would be held.
