MUCH-NEEDED EQUIPMENT: Chief Minister Y. S . Rajasekhara Reddy handing over six heavy duty cranes to the Police Department at a function in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

HYDERABAD: Traffic jams, a regular feature on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad national highway (NH 9), due to stranded vehicles following road accidents, may go now.

The government provided a solution to this perennial problem by supplying six Escort heavy duty cranes to the police who will use them to remove stranded or damaged vehicles.

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy flagged them off at a brief function in the Secretariat on Wednesday attended by Ministers K. Jana Reddy (Home), K. Lakshminarayana (Transport) and S.S.P Yadav, DGP.

The decision to deploy cranes along this busy corridor was taken by Chief Minister recently at a meeting on traffic snarls but he asked the Transport Department to purchase them and hand over to the police.

The cranes have been purchased under SAFAR scheme at a cost of Rs. 29 lakh each and transferred to the police.

14 tonnes capacity

The cranes, each with a capacity to lift 14 tonnes, will be positioned at key points along the highway.

J. Raymond Peter, Transport Commissioner and B. Venkateswarlu, Joint Commissioner, told reporters that three of the cranes would be allotted to Nalgonda district for deployment along the highway passing through this district, two to Krishna and one to Ranga Reddy. Another 12 canes would be purchased to meet the police needs.
