HYDERABAD: The revival of the monsoon has improved the situation in the State by reducing rainfall deficit to 19 per cent and increasing the sown area to 40.86 lakh hectares, against the kharif’s normal of 79 lakh ha - a 51 per cent coverage. Andhra Pradesh received a cumulative rainfall of 232.6 mm from June 1, compared to a normal of 292.2 mm. Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy said normal extent of soyabean and cotton was fully sown, while that of black-gram, groundnut and sugar was above 76 per cent. The entire irrigated dry area would be fully covered in a couple of days. As there is time for paddy till August 15, its normal area too was expected to be covered by next week. Meanwhile, Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar are expecting more inflows, with Almatti and Narayanpur dams in adjoining Karnataka discharging of 9,000 cusecs each. Jurala project is already getting 3,125 cusecs from upstream and inflows are expected to improve soon. Flood water is also expected to Srisailam from Tungabhadra river. As inflows reaching Tungabhadra dam swelled to 55,073 cusecs on Wednesday, its crest-gates are likely to be lifted anytime. Levels at the Krishna river rose at Vijayawada, forcing authorities to lift 13 of its 72 flood-gates, while the Godavari too rose at Dowlaiswaram. Sriramasagar project across the river has been getting inflows of 4,099 cusecs in the past few days. More rains have been forecast for the State on Thursday-Friday due to the low pressure area in the Bay. Rainfall deficit of the Coastal Andhra tumbled to 3 per cent and that of Rayalaseema and Telangana to 27 per cent and 29 per cent respectively. Among districts, Vizianagaram, Krishna, Guntur, Anantapur, Khammam, East and West Godavari recorded excess rainfall, and Nellore, Kadapa, Mahabubnagar, Hyderabad and Medak suffered deficits.
