Getting serious about folklore

Kozhikode: Admission is open to the M.A. course in folklore conducted by the Centre for Folklore Studies of University of Calicut at Vadakara. The folklore study centre of Calicut University is the only centre in the State offering a postgraduate programme in this subject.

The MA Folklore course is designed to provide a deep understanding of theories of folklore across the world and to encourage research into the subject, Raghavan Payyanad, Head, Centre for Folklore Studies, said. Besides theories of folklore, the European and American perspectives of folklore and folklore research in the East and in Kerala are also studied in detail.

The two-year, four-semester course, besides dealing with folklore, also touches upon related topics such as folklore and media, folk medicine and folklore and tourism. The course has been attracting students since it gives exposure to topics like tourism, journalism and folk medicine besides giving a deep insight into various aspects of folklore.

Training in computer, videography and photography is also included in the syllabus. Students will get one month’s training in reporting and editing in a media organisation.

The students are expected to get training from reputed tourism agencies also so that they would gain knowledge about cultural tourism, eco -tourism, native craft marketing and folk art and art.
