CHENNAI: The State unit of the CPI (M) will continue to adopt an issue-based approach towards the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, State secretary N. Varadarajan said on Sunday. “Unlike the UPA government at the Centre, the DMK is not heading a coalition government guided by a common minimum programme. In the past, our approach was decided by the DMK government’s stand on various issues concerning the people. We will continue to follow it,” he said in a statement. Mr. Varadarajan said the Congress was the “real culprit” as far as the Indo-US nuclear deal was concerned while the DMK and the PMK supported it. “We will oppose all those who support the nuclear deal from an ideological point of view.” He said the party would evolve a political strategy at the national level and in Tamil Nadu once Lok Sabha elections were announced. “We will take into consideration the political situation in Tamil Nadu and adopt a strategy. We will be guided by the all India leadership.” Mr. Varadarajan said the party, along with other Left and secular democratic forces, was running nation-wide campaigns against the nuclear deal and price rise. POTAHe condemned AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa’s demand for revival of POTA in the wake of the Bangalore and Ahmedabad blasts. He also took exception to the arrest of Vanniyar Sangam leader Kaduvetti J Guru under the NSA. “Existing criminal laws are adequate,” he added.
