CHENNAI: Clarinet maestro A.K.C. Natarajan has been unanimously chosen by the executive committee of the Music Academy to preside over the 82nd annual conference to be held from December 15, 2008 to January 1, 2009. He will be conferred the ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ title at the sadas on January 1, 2009, said president of the Music Academy N. Murali in a press release on Monday. The 78-year-old Natarajan, son of clarinet vidwan Chinna Krishna Naidu, learnt nagaswaram, but pursued a career as a clarinet artist. His nagaswaram teacher was Iluppur Natesa Pillai, brother of the great thavil maestro Iluppur Panchami. He received his lessons in vocal music from Alathur Venkatesa Iyer, father of Alathur Sivasubramania Iyer. “In opting for clarinet, I made a conscious decision. I was overawed not just by the music of legends like Thiruvaduthurai Rajarathinam Pillai, Thiruvenkadu Subramania Pillai and Thiruvidaimaruthur Veerusamy Pillai, but also by their personalities. Competing with them and occupying a space for myself was not that easy,” he would say.
