Identity cards for visitors on the anvil

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: With a view to keeping a tab on the floating population in Bangalore and other second-tier cities, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Monday said the Government was thinking of issuing identity cards to visitors apart from installing a large number of video cameras at all important places throughout the State.

Replying to a debate in the Legislative Assembly on the serial blasts that rocked Bangalore on Friday last, Mr. Yeddyurappa said in most countries, foreigners could not stay even a day longer after their visa period was expired.

A similar measure had to be implemented here.

The Chief Minister said narco-analysis on those taken into custody in the past had revealed that ammunition supplies to anti-social elements were being routed along the coast.

The Government was planning to educate the people on terrorists and the preventive steps that they had to take apart from refusing to rent their houses to strangers.

“There are even sympathisers for the terrorists and I request citizens to give clues to the police about them.”

Mr. Yeddyurappa said the personnel of the anti-terrorist cell of the police would be given special training apart from a new range of firearms. The intelligence wing of the State police would also be strengthened.
