Development Council seeks steps to end fuel shortage

KOCHI: The Ernakulam District Development Council on Saturday demanded that the State government rectify the anomalies in the single window system in the district for Plus One admissions.

The meeting, chaired by District Collector M. Beena, pointed out that many students received admission in schools more than 30 km away from home.

The resolution moved by K. Babu, MLA, suggested that the system should be reworked in such a way as to facilitate admission in schools within 5 km radius of the students’ home. Jose Thettayil, MLA, seconded the resolution. Saju Paul, MLA, moved a resolution requesting the Central and State governments to take steps to end the scarcity of petrol and diesel in the district. M.K. Purushothaman and M.J. Jacob, MLAs, supported the resolution.

Stone quarries

Mr. Paul said applications for operating stone quarries in villages where resurvey was yet to be completed should be carefully scrutinised and strict action should be taken to prevent the setting up of illegal ones.

The Deputy Director, Survey, told the meeting that of the 124 villages, resurvey was over in 68. Mr. Babu said staff shortage at village offices should not create difficulties to those coming to include their names in the voters’ list.

The principal agriculture officer said that Rs. 50 lakh had been received for meeting outstanding expenses in connection with the project of free power supply to the farmers. He said Rs. 67 lakh had been distributed as compensation among farmers. Another Rs.15 lakh was needed on this count.

Mr. Babu Paul recommended urgent action to approve remaining works utilising the River Protection Fund. The Fisheries Director informed the meeting that housing fund was available for fishing workers. Mr. Thettayil and A.M. Yousuf, MLA, demanded balanced usage of the Rs. 7.76 crore allotted by the Finance Commission for road development.

Mr. Saju Paul said the proposed traffic reforms at Perumbavur should be implemented without delay.

A meeting of the tribal mission in connection with the distribution of land to eligible Adivasi families would be held on July 28, the Scheduled Tribe Development Officer said. The progress of the construction of 33 kV sub-stations at Thottakkattukara, Aluva government guesthouse, Perumbavur mini civil station and Njarakkal guesthouse were also raised by the MLAs.
