SFI opposes foreign institutes

NEW DELHI: The Students’ Federation of India has expressed concern over any move to allow foreign universities to set up their branches in India, likening it to a “direct attack on the intellectual self-reliance” of the country.

“The Central Executive Committee of the SFI has strongly opposed the Union Government’s decision to allow foreign educational institutes to start their franchises in the country. At a recent conference of State higher education ministers, this Government put forward the supposed lack of public funding as an excuse for opening up the higher education sector for private and foreign players,” charged SFI president R. Arun Kumar in a statement.

Legislation

“This is in effect carrying forward the vision of the NDA Government. The UPA Government’s dependence on the Left’s support and the widespread opposition to the move made it impossible for introduction of a legislation allowing private and foreign universities. After the withdrawal of Left support, the Government is eager to make up for the ‘lost time’ and introduce anti-people legislations,” he alleged.
