THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has tied up with California Oncology Group and 21st Century Oncology Centre, U.S., to set up a cancer centre here. The proposed KIMS California Comprehensive Cancer Centre will make available modern methods of cancer detection and treatment, according to Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS M.I. Sahadulla. The centre would become functional in three months, he added. Experts from the U.S. had visited KIMS recently to finalise infrastructure facilities required for the centre. SpecialisationsThe cancer centre will have a centre for cancer prevention, early cancer detection centre, sections for medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, gynaecological oncology, paediatric oncology, breast centre, and a centre for cancer education and research. The oncology centre will provide treatment with radiation oncology equipment, chemotherapy and immunotherapy in tune with the latest procedures in the U.S. Early diagnosisBreast centre will have facilities for early diagnosis using mammogram and ultrasound and will conduct orientation programmes for both medical personnel and public. The gynaecological oncology section will focus on pap smears for prevention and early diagnosis of cervical cancer as well as treatment of cancer in cervix, uterus and ovary. Dr. Sahadulla said there would be constant exchange of technology and medical personnel between the cancer centre and major cancer centres in the U.S. Critical care sectionAlready, the KIMS has set up a modern critical care department with advanced equipment and trained intensives (ICU specialists) to treat critically ill patients with a wide variety of medical problems. The critical care department has a modern MICU and trained intensivists. It has a negative pressure room and positive pressure room, according to Director, Medical Services, KIMS, G.Vijayaraghavan. The negative pressure room provides intensive care to those with infectious diseases like chicken pox, measles and TB while the positive pressure room will be used for patients with low immunity. The MICU is equipped to manage multiple organ failures,Dr. Sahadulla said.
