TIRUCHI: The Federation of Service Organisations has appealed to the district administration to give up a proposal to construct medians on the Thillai Nagar Main Road. In a resolution adopted at its recent meeting here, the federation suggested that the road could be declared one-way and traffic on the other direction could be diverted through the Shastri Road, running parallel to it. Steps should be taken immediately to lay the proposed Anna Nagar Link Road connecting Anna Nagar Main Road with Cantonment. This would provide a good alternative link with Shastri Road and relieve congestion on Thillai Nagar Main Road, the federation said. It urged the State government to supply two varieties of rice through public distribution system. The fine variety could even be priced slightly higher than the double-boiled rice, it suggested. It also called upon the district administration, police and the Transport Department to crack down against overloading in autorickshaws, especially those carrying school children in excess of the stipulated numbers. It appealed to the Public Works Department to ensure that the Puthur weir in the city, from where the Kudamuritti river originates, be fitted with at least 10 shutters to regulate surplus water flow under the flood prevention scheme. The federation urged the State government to take steps to retrieve Katchatheevu to protect the interests of the fishermen of the State.
