TIRUCHI: Distribution of saplings to the residents of the local village marked the environment awareness camp organised by the SHEPHERD Extension Department of the St. Joseph’s College in Nangavaram near here recently. A group of 16 students of the department led by M. Ronak Asrani decided to conduct the environment awareness camp in the village as they noticed during their maiden visit to the village a few months ago the absence of big trees, which usually formed part of the villages, and the lack of awareness among the local people on increasing forest cover. C. Sivasubramanian, lecturer of environment science from Thanjavur, M. Antony Jesuraj, faculty, Department of Commerce of the college and the coordinator of the SHEPHERD, P. Mani were the resource persons at the seminar. Dr. Sivasubramanian said that in olden days, whenever a new child was born, a sapling was planted in the village. Both the new born and the sapling were taken care of by the locals. Saplings were planted at the time of marriages too as a token of love and for the prosperity of the newly wed.
