G.O. ignores certain disciplines for grants or admission to professional courses under sports quota HYDERABAD: A high-level delegation of Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association (APOA) has decided to take up with Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the issue of ignoring some non-Olympic disciplines for consideration of either grants or admission to professional courses under sports quota as per G.O. No. 10 (July 15, 2008). At an emergency meeting convened at the Andhra Pradesh Olympic Bhavan here on Thursday and attended by representatives of 15 disciplines, various sports associations took serious exception to the government’s “illogical conclusion that some games are not popular hence cannot be equated with established games.” Popular games“Actually, it is the other way round as games not figuring in the G.O. are very popular and are producing results which not many Olympic disciplines can match,” it was stated. The APOA was disappointed that popular non-Olympic disciplines like carrom and Sepak Tekraw have been ignored despite having an international calendar. Denial of supportThe fate of scores of sportspersons hang in balance with the denial of government support, it was pointed out. “How fair is it to ignore claims of sportspersons from these non-Olympic disciplines that have won world championships and brought many laurels to the State?” asked an official. Till the latest order was issued, the State government had been releasing substantial grants annually to the now excluded non-Olympic games, it was said.
