CHENNAI: Postmen now have brand new motorbikes to deliver Speed Post and articles.

On Thursday, India Post’s Principal Chief Postmaster General of the Tamil Nadu Circle, Indira Krishna Kumar, handed over TVS Star motorbikes, windcheaters and mask helmets to five postmen of Anna Nagar Post Office to ensure speedy delivery of postal articles. She also flagged off ‘Logistic Post’ containing medicine from Arihant Pharma.

“This is the first post office in the north division where we have given the new bikes for Speed Post personnel. Eventually, we will cover everyone. Still our postmen prefer to travel by bicycle or foot to deliver postal articles, depending on the road stretch, as it may not be easy to stop and start the bike every time,” Ms. Kumar told The Hindu.

Senior Superintendent of Post offices, Chennai City North Division, Kalaiyarasi Raamaswamy, said the north zone had 36 postmen and all of them would be given motorbikes. “We will maintain a log book and issue fuel coupons. Generally, these postmen travel around 40-50 km a day on two shifts. In the coming days, the distance will come down as they will take the shortest route to deliver the article on time. This will result in improved efficiency.”

Encouraging feedback

The south division has 19 postmen and the Tambaram division, around 15-20. Two motorbikes were delivered to post offices in Guindy and Madipakkam areas on trial basis two months ago and the feedback has been encouraging.
