Atrocities against women on the rise in Kodagu: DYFI

Madikeri: The incidence of atrocities against women is on the rise in Kodagu, Varija Bharat, State co-convener of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) women’s committee, has said. She was talking to presspersons here on Thursday. Referring to the cases of “dowry deaths” at Kondangeri and Imangala, she said that brokers, who were involved in such cases, should be brought to book. Police “inaction” was encouraging such brokers. A Muslim woman had died at Kondangeri and a Hindu woman at Imangala a few days ago and both were allegedly dowry deaths, she said.

Ms. Bharat alleged that the police were yet to crack the case of missing of two girls — Gubbi and Chitra — from Arecad in Madikeri taluk. It was registered in 2001. Death of plantation workers in hospitals were not being registered, she said.

There were many women’s organisations in the district, but they were working only towards getting benefits out of government schemes. Such organisations should instil confidence in women, she said. The DYFI women’s sub-committee would take out a rally here on July 28, and submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and the Labour Department urging them to ensure safety of women and children in the district, Ms. Bharat said. Mary Anbudas, a member of the DYFI women’s wing, said that the DYFI had decided to stage protests in August against price rise and erratic power supply position in Kodagu. Bhagya, a member, spoke on the plight of tribal women working in households.
