Naandi to set up water purifying plants in 100 Haryana villages

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: City-based Naandi Foundation on Thursday said it would set up purification plants in 100 villages of Haryana under its Community-based Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) programme, covering a population of 5 lakh in the first phase.

A press release said an MoU to this effect was signed at Chandigarh on Wednesday between Haryana’s Commissioner and Secretary-Public Works Roshan Lal and Naandi’s National Director Amit Jain, in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

As per the MoU, Naandi will set up safe water plants in 100 villages using reverse osmosis technology with its partner TATA Projects in Mewat, Mahendragarh, Jhajjar and Kaithal districts, where contamination levels in drinking water sources was very high. The plants will be set up over the next three years and while the panchayats will permit drawal of water for purification, apart from contributing partially to plant costs, users will pay 10 paise per litre.

Apart from providing safe water at low cost, the model ensured that the fee collected would help sustain the plant’s maintenance, said Mr. Jain. Naandi currently worked on water and sanitation, child rights and sustainable livelihood projects across 11 States.
