KANNUR: A hartal called by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the Thalassery constituency and Mahe in protest against the killing of a party worker suspected to be by a National Development Front (NDF) worker near Thalassery on Wednesday night passed off peacefully. The CPI(M) worker U.K. Saleem (32) was stabbed to death at Kidaramkunnu near New Mahe at around 9.30 p.m. The police said that Saleem and fellow party worker Khader (23) were allegedly attacked by a group of NDF workers. Khader has been admitted to hospital with injuries. Isolated incidents of attacks targeting local Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and NDF workers occurred following the killing of the CPI(M) workers. A local IUML worker K.K. Noushad (29) was stabbed by a group of suspected CPI(M) workers at Ussanmotta at around 10.30 p.m.
