All the best: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy blesses a girl before handing over textbooks provided by the TTD in Hyderabad on Thursday.

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy inaugurated yet another social programme of the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to give fillip to women’s education, by symbolically distributing textbooks to a girl-students’ batch of Intermediate from poor families at the Secretariat on Thursday.

The scheme named ‘Sri Padmavati Ammavari Pustaka Prasadam’, being implemented from this year, aims at distribution of textbooks to one lakh Intermediate girls at a cost of Rs. 5 crore annually.

Addressing the girls later, Dr. Reddy complimented the TTD for combining social objectives with its spiritual programmes, citing Dalit Govindam under which Lord Venkateswara was taken to SC colonies. He said he was planning to make education up to Intermediate mandatory for girls as otherwise, parents would stop education to them when they attained 16 years of age, and marry off.

TTD Chairman B. Karunakar Reddy announced that the Devasthanams would hereafter bear the entire cost of education up to post-graduation in case of girls of poor families who secured more than 500 marks in Intermediate. TTD executive officer K. V. Ramanachary welcomed the gathering.
