KOTTAYAM: R. Rajesh (Chennai) and V. Jayalakshmi (Coimbatore) won the men’s and women’s singles titles in the South Zone LIC table tennis tournament at the YMCA hall here on Thursday. The top seed Rajesh easily beat T. Vijayendran (Salem) 11-5, 11-5, 11-4, 16-14 in the final. Rajesh had earlier accounted for A. Nasar in the semifinal. Rajesh won in four straight sets — 11-8, 11-9, 11-3, 11-9. Vijayendran beat Sasikumar in the other semifinal. Jayalakshmi had to recover after losing three sets in a row to beat R. Geetha (Chennai) 11-9, 11-13, 7-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-7, 11-7 in the final. In the semifinals, Jayalakshmi beat Sujatha while Geetha downed Saliamma Sebastian. The results: Men (final): R. Rajesh (Chennai) bt T. Vijayendran (Salem) 11-5, 11-5, 11-4, 16-14. Semifinals: Rajesh bt A. Nasar (Madurai) 11-8, 11-9, 11-3, 11-9; Vijayendran bt V. Sasikumar (Kozhikode) 11-6, 11-2, 8-11, 11-9, 11-3. Women (final): V. Jayalakshmi (Coimbatore) bt R. Geetha (Chennai) 11-9, 11-13, 7-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-7, 11-7.
