The public affairs section of the U.S. Embassy and the Outreach Programme of Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi has mounted a photo exhibition titled “Building Islam in Detroit” on the Jamia campus. The exhibition, comprising panels of visuals and accompanying explanatory text, was inaugurated by Steven White, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, earlier this week. Jamia Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan was also present at the function. Detroit is home to the largest and oldest population of Muslims in the US. “Building Islam in Detroit” is a research project that documents the growth of Muslim communities in Detroit over the last century. The project which began in May 2004 includes interviews with people and documents their histories. “The exhibition explores ‘building’ as a process that creates both physical objects and social identities. Mosques are ideal examples of this creative process. They are sites at which Muslims give collective and material expression to their beliefs. The display aims at helping the viewer appreciate the historical richness, diversity and influence of Islam in Detroit,” said Jamia media coordinator Rakhshanda Jalil. The exhibition is on view at FTK Centre for Information Technology on the Jamia campus from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. till Friday. Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, has announced its fourth General Management Programme for defence officers. This 24-week programme is open to both Short Service Commission officers and others. The response to the first three programmes conducted by IIML so far has been good. Fifty-nine defence officers from all the three branches of the armed forces have been selected for the programme this year. Seven of them are women officers. The objective of the programme is to provide the participants with a basic understanding of the managerial systems and processes. It has been designed to equip defence officers with basic functional inputs in subjects like accounting and finance, organisational behaviour, human resources management, communication skills, marketing, strategy and business environment. “Management education to defence personnel contributes to providing them with a second career choice after retirement,” said N.K. Gupta and S.C. Bansal, directors of the programme. Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai inaugurated the M.P. Varshney High Voltage Laboratory and ICT facilities at Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology at Aligarh Muslim University earlier this week. Prof. Varshney, who studied at the University during1942-46, has donated Rs.10 lakh for the extension of the High Voltage Laboratory named after him. Addressing a function on the campus, Prof. Kidwai said he spent the best years of his life at AMU as a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry. He appreciated the efforts of the present Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis for “academic rejuvenation of this great seat of learning”. Earlier, Prof. Azis said AMU had made enhancement of Information and Communication Technology activities its top priority. He pointed out that the University had made progress in providing ICT facilities to all staff and students. In another development at AMU, Ali Raza Rizvi, lecturer at the Institute of Ophthalmology in Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, has received an international fellowship in Oculoplastics and Ocular Oncology.
