KOCHI: A new digital bus punching centre will be launched in the city by the police with an aim to control the speed of private transport buses that have caused a majority of accidents in the city. A statement from the City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said that demand had come in from all quarters to control the over-speeding and rash driving by these buses. Under the digital system, there would be seven bus punching cabins at different locations of the city, which are Ravipuram, Menaka Junction, Near A.R. Camp, Ernakulam, Kaloor Private Bus Stand, Near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kalamassery Appollo Tryre Junction and Thripunithura Private Bus Stand. Each bus driving in this area will be provided with a digital card which will have to be swiped at the punching centre and which will register the time automatically. No changes can be made either by the drivers or by the policemen sitting in the cabin. Such a step will ensure that there is no over-speeding or delay in buses reaching the spot or cutting trips or taking unauthorised diversions of routes. The Home Minister will inaugurate the function to launch the new system on Saturday at A.J. Hall, Kaloor at 5 p.m. The city police are also taking up the case of prepaid autorickshaws, which has failed to take off at many places. The system will be re-introduced at South and North railway stations with the cooperation of the Southern Railways and trade unions. The pre-paid autorickshaw counter will be inaugurated by Titus Koshy, DRM. Southern Railway.
