Special Correspondent

FOR JOURNALISTS & NON-JOURNALISTS: Justice K. Narayana Kurup, Chairman of the National Wage Boards for Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees (second from left), submits his report on interim relief to Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes in New Delhi on Monday. Others (from left) are K.M. Sahni (Member-Secretary), B.P. Singh (Member, National Wage Boards), and Sudha Pillai (Secretary, Labour and Employment).

NEW DELHI: Justice K. Narayana Kurup on Tuesday submitted an interim report of the two wage boards for working journalists and non-journalists in newspapers and news agencies recommending an interim relief of 30 per cent of the basic salary for newspaper employees with effect from January 8, 2008.

This decision was arrived at through voting after a detailed discussion at a meeting held here last month.

The recommendations were submitted to the Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes by Mr. Justice Kurup.

The trade unions in the newspaper industry have demanded an increase in the proposed hike and described the recommended hike as below expectations in the wake of increasing inflation.

The National Wage Boards for Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees were set up through a notification on May 24, 2007 and are to submit its recommendations within three years.

These wage boards have been constituted for fixing or revising wages of journalists and non-journalists and other newspapers employees in accordance with the provisions of the Working Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1955.

Both the boards have 10 members each and Mr. Justice Kurup, a former Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, chairs the two boards.

The former Union Labour and Employment Secretary, K.M. Sahni, is the member-secretary of the two boards, while the two independent members are B.P. Singh and P.N. Prasanna Kumar.
