MANGALORE: It was a rare occasion for teachers and students of Mangalore University, who witnessed K.M. Kaveriappa, their Vice-Chancellor, in full NCC uniform, for a few hours on Wednesday.

Mr. Kaveriappa was conferred the rank of Honorary Colonel Commandant of NCC on the occasion by the Directorate of the National Cadet Corps, at Mangalagangotri.

The Group Commander, NCC, Mangalore, Colonel G.R.R. Reddy, presented Mr. Kaveriappa with a certificate, a baton and a cap, signifying the conferment of the rank at an event called the “piping ceremony”. It is in recognition of the exemplary performance of NCC officers and cadets under the university.

Earlier, the directorate had conferred the rank on Shafi Ullah, S. Gopal and B. Hanumaiah, all former Vice-Chancellors of Mangalore University, in recognition of their achievements. Speaking after receiving the rank, Mr. Kaveriappa said the university would felicitate outstanding NCC cadets and officers of the university by organising a function from this academic year onwards. The NCC Group in Mangalore should select such candidates and officers and refer their names to the university.

He said the university had brought the NCC service under extra-curricular activities category, whose members would be awarded credits under the credit-based semester scheme for degree courses.

The Vice-Chancellor said there was a strong need for motivators to urge students to join the NCC. “NCC signifies character-building, discipline, devotion and obedience,” The Indian Army and NCC are complementary units, he added.

Mr. Kaveriappa said the rank conferred on him was in recognition of the achievements of all NCC cadets and officers of the university.
