Krishnasamy took out a procession from Tirunelveli Railway Junction with Puthiya Tamizhagam cadres

TIRUNELVELI: Leaders of various political parties and organisations showered flower petals in Tamirabharani on Wednesday in memory of 17 persons, who drowned in the perennial river when a rally took out in support of Maanjolai tea estate workers turned violent on this day in 1999.

K. Krishnasamy of Puthiya Thamizhagam, Thol. Thirumavalavan of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, members of Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Pattali Makkal Katchi, Bhahujan Samaj Party, Mallar Meetpu Kalam, Marumalarchi Makkal Thamizhagam, Puthiya Bharatham, Bharatiya Janata Party, Aathi Thamizhar Paeravai, Dalit Viduthalai Katchi, Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninist) and other organizations showered petals at Tamirabharani amidst tight police protection.

Dr. Krishnasamy, who took out a silent procession from Tirunelveli Railway Junction with party cadres, was stopped near Anna Statue by the police force, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Tirunelveli City, T. Jayachandran, and was allowed to go to the river with some of his supporters and relatives of the victims in four vehicles.

Due share

Addressing the cadres after the annual ritual was over, the Puthiya Thamizhagam chief said the party’s struggle against oppression of all sorts in every field would continue until the “oppressed” got their due share. “The sacrifice of PT cadres will not go in vain,” he said.

Since the police had already met the representatives of political parties and other organizations, which wished to pay their tribute to the victims and meticulously drawn a ‘homage schedule’ for them, the day passed off without any untoward incident.
