dated July 24, 1958: Russia’s peace efforts

Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, speaking at a Moscow diplomatic reception on July 22 hailed the “disruption” of the Baghdad Pact and welcomed the new regime in Iraq. He said: “We greet the Government of the Arab Republic of Iraq. We hail the new Prime Minister for his fearlessness and his staunch character.” Mr. Khrushchev, who was speaking without notes at a Polish National Day reception in Moscow, went on: “We want peace in the whole world, we do not want war. War is the last desperate resort of the imperialists – like that of a man dying of cancer who is so desperate that he submits to the risk of a final operation. Marx was a great surgeon. He showed the world how to cut out the capitalistic cancer.” Brimming over with confidence, Mr. Khrushchev said: “We know the Arabs are not Marxists. They are fighting under the flag of nationalism.”
