Rain brings cheer to farmers

Staff Correspondent

Sowing activities may resume in a few taluks

Sowing taken up in only 1.06 lakh hectares of land

Navalgund taluk records less than 1 per cent sowing

DHARWAD: The good rain the district, especially the taluks of Dharwad and Hubli, received on Tuesday has brought back the smile on the faces of farmers.

While Hubli and Dharwad taluks received good rain on Tuesday, Kundgol and Navalgund taluks received moderate rain. However Kalghatgi taluk did not receive any rain on Tuesday.

Although good rain on a single day does not mean much to the farmers, it has certainly brought relief to them as the dry spell has ended at least temporarily with Tuesday’s rain.

The rain has made the farmers, who had stopped going to their farmlands because of the dry spell, to resume agricultural activities.

According to sources in the Agriculture Department, there was still time for sowing, especially for horticultural crops such as onion, sunflower, groundnut, and the farmers would definitely take up sowing.

Sowing target

According to the official statistics, against the target of 2.03 lakh hectares of land, sowing operations had been taken up in only 1.06 lakh hectares in the district. Kalghatagi taluk had recorded 100 per cent sowing followed by Dharwad taluk (78 per cent), Hubli (25 per cent), Kundagol (20 per cent) and Navalgund (less than 1 per cent). The rain would certainly lead to resumption of the sowing activities, the agricultural officials said.

Tuesday’s rain has also brought relief to the farmers who had completed sowing and were apprehensive of crop loss because of the dry spell.

According to official sources, Dharwad taluk received an average rainfall of 76.7 mm on Tuesday alone followed by Hubli (53.5 mm). Kundagol taluk received 7.5 mm while 4.4 mm of rainfall was recorded in Navalgund taluk.

Although the district has received less than the average rainfall in July, Tuesday’s rain has rekindled the hope of at least moderate rainfall in the coming days, which they hope would be sufficient for a moderate yield and moderate quantity of fodder.
