Farmers oppose move to acquire farmland

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: Farmers of Kamkaratti, six km from here on the Pune-Bangalore Express Highway (NH4), on Wednesday marched to the office of the Deputy Commissioner to re-assert their stand against handing over their agricultural land to the government, either for the establishment of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha or any other industrial purpose.

The farmers have taken the stand ever since they learnt that the district administration had identified a substantial area under the village following directions from Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to find an “alternative” site for constructing the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha during his visit to the city last month.

The Chief Minister’s direction comes in the wake of the demand of the two BJP MPs from the district, Suresh C. Angadi and Prabhakar B. Kore, to shift the site from the Vaccine Institute in Tilakwadi to a “suitable” location on the express highway.

The district unit of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha threatened to launch an agitation if the Government coerced the farmers to part with their lands. The KRRS warned against initiating action to acquire their lands, which are the only source of their livelihood. The protestors said that if the BJP Government, which came to power in the name of farmers, should protect the interests of the latter, instead of ruining their lives by trying to acquire their lands.
