PUDUCHERRY: Deputy Director-General Doordharshan Kendra Vedhamany Senapathi on Wednesday appealed to teachers to adopt innovative methods to make students “think beyond what they teach.” Speaking at a 21-day orientation programme for college teachers at Pondicherry University, he said, “The conventional method of teaching of what is prescribed in the syllabus and present in textbooks can create only ordinary citizens. Teaching practice modelled on that line can generate only bookish knowledge among the students. In this era of intense competition, mere bookish knowledge will not help the students to face day-to-day affairs with courage. They should be taught matters related to inter-personal relationship.” Director of Culture and Cultural Relations, Pondicherry University A. Balasubramanian appealed to the teachers to introduce innovative methods in teaching to make the subjects interesting to the students. “Innovation, creativity not identical”“Innovation involves creativity, but is not identical to it. It involves acting on the creative ideas to make some specific and tangible difference,” he said. Successful teacherDean and director of Bangalore Management Academy, Bangalore, N. Jayasankar said, “Creativity and innovation are gifts to humanity. They are present in all individuals and the teachers should kindle creativity and innovation of their students. A successful teacher is one who makes the subject interesting to the student.” Others who spoke included director in-charge of University Grants Commission - Academic Staff College S. Hariharan and professor Panch Ramalingam.
