Bellary
The supply is going haywire due to coal shortage and failure of the monsoon BELLARY: Frequent power cuts have affected normal life in Bellary district. For the past three days, there has been no power supply throughout the day. At night, there are frequent interruptions. Failure of the monsoon and shortage of coal are the main reason for the power supply going haywire throughout the State, according to official sources. Cloudy weather during the day has increased the humidity level, causing discomfort to residents forcing them to resort to alternative sources of power such as generators and invertors. The situation was a little better on Wednesday with power cuts not as frequent as on the previous two days. A GESCOM official told The Hindu that there was little water in almost all the hydel reservoirs and thermal power plants were facing shortage of coal. Hydel power generation was being limited. In addition, steps were being taken to streamline the supply of available power, the official said. Hotels and the service industry are the worst affected by the regular power cuts. “The continuous power cut and the unavailability of diesel have made it very difficult for us to run restaurants and lodges,” Madhusudhan, a hotelier, said.
