COIMBATORE: About 25 destitute persons from Kerala were brought to Udavum Karangal, a rehabilitation home for mentally ill destitute in Coimbatore recently. R. Rajagopal, Governing Body Member of the organisation, said that all the members in the group were originally from Tamil Nadu but, had been roaming the streets of Kerala. Though a non-Governmental organisation took them into its care, the volunteers found it difficult to communicate with them owing to the language barrier. They had been taken into the NGO’s care home from the streets at various points in time. The NGO that came to know of Udavum Karangal and its work in Coimbatore decided to send the people by train, accompanied by volunteers, to Coimbatore where they would feel more at home and be able to communicate with the caretakers. “All of them have mental illness but, they are very co-operative to treatment,” Dr. Rajagopal said. “They are currently under medication,” he added.
