The total number of voters, as per the draft electoral rolls, was 15,77,380 against the pre-delimitation voters strength of 15,34,180. There were 7,93,622 women voters in the district, slightly higher than the 7,83,758 men. Though the number of the Assembly segments in the district would remain the same at nine as before, extensive changes have been made in the boundaries of the constituencies. The district gets three new Assembly segments, Manachanallur, Thuraiyur and Manapparai, while three others Marungapuri, Thottiyam and Uppilliyapuram have been abolished. Names changedThe names of the Tiruchi I and Tiruchi II constituencies have been changed as Tiruchi East and Tiruchi West respectively. The Srirangam Assembly segment with 2,04,557 voters would be the biggest in the district, in terms of the size of the electorate. The constituency has got several new areas under its fold including nine panchayats from the Kulithalai region in Karur district. Tiruverambur constituency comes second with 1,87,548 voters and Manapparai stands a close third with 1,87,501 voters. Tiruchi East, which had the least number of voters among the Assembly segments in the district prior to the delimitation, now has 1,78,034 voters, an increase of about 70,000. Tiruchi West has 1,76,894 voters, the newly formed Manachanallur 1,62,612, Musiri 1,64,247 and Thuraiyur 1,62,525 voters. Releasing the details here on Tuesday, Collector T.Soundiah said that the number of polling stations has been gone up to 2,059 from 1,991. He disclosed that 99.96 per cent of voters in the district have already been issued Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC). For new voters and those who have not got it so far, the ID cards would be issued through the permanent EPIC centres opened (at the respective taluk offices and the Tiruchi Corporation) in every constituency from the first week of August. Special revisionA special revision of the electoral rolls, with January 1, 2008 as the qualifying date has been taken up in the district. Applications for additions (Form VI and 001A), deletions (Form 7) and corrections (Form 8 or 8A) could be filed during the revision exercise, which would go on till July 31. VerificationCommencing Tuesday, the draft electoral rolls would be verified door-to-door, with nearly 850 government servants being deployed for the purpose. The enumerators would issue a slip detailing the number of voters in each household and paste a sticker on every verified house so as to avoid omissions. Applications received for inclusions, deletions and corrections would be verified door-to-door from August 1 to 14. The final electoral rolls, after the special revision, would be released on August 31.
