Adulterated milk seized in Salem

Staff Reporter

Officials conduct raids

SALEM: The Salem Corporation launched a drive against adulteration in milk in the city on Tuesday.

A team of officials led by City Health Officer B.R. Gemini raided cooperative and private units and milk selling points in various parts of the city and seized a large quantity of adulterated milk.

The civic body had taken up the initiative following instructions from Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Office of the Joint Director (Prevention of Food Adulteration).

The Corporation also received widespread complaints that adulterated milk and milk products were being sold to unsuspecting customers, which could have serious health implications.

Milk sold by the private vendors and cooperative units in Gugai, Ammapet, Four Roads, New Integrated Bus Stand, Old Bus Stand, Kondalampatti, Sooramangalam and a few other parts was checked.

Officials seized 300 litres of adulterated milk and destroyed it.

The team also raided 16 private milk chilling units in the city. Six of them were found misusing the permission given to them.

The six units were found extracting fat from the milk using machines, for which approval had not been obtained from the authorities concerned, civic officials said.

The operations in three other units were stopped as they were found functioning under unhygienic conditions.

Corporation officials said that the civic body would shortly launch a drive to prevent adulteration in other food products.

Steps would also be taken up to raise the level of awareness among consumers.

Similar inspections were carried out in various parts of Salem district.
