According to police, the woman, Amudha (37) and her husband, Madhavan (38), an autorickshaw driver, had a quarrel following which the woman allegedly doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze. Her husband, who tried to save her, was also seriously injured. The couple were admitted to Government Kilpauk Hospital where Amudha succumbed to injuries around 1.20 a.m. on Sunday. Madhavan’s condition is critical, police said. The couple have a two-and-half year old child.
Dowry harassment
Ashok Nagar women police on Sunday arrested and remanded to judicial custody a man on charges of dowry harassment. The arrest followed a complaint by Vinodhini Rajeswari (33) that her husband Aravindhan was demanding dowry. The woman, daughter of a former IAS officer, said in her complaint that he had refused to return gold jewellery given to her during marriage. The couple were married in 1997.
