CHENNAI: Awareness of safety methods at workplace should be spread among all people, Chief Inspector of Factories S. Elangovan said on Saturday. MeasuresSpeaking at the anniversary function of the Safety Engineers Association (SEA), he said many thought that safety measures were meant only for workers, but awareness should be spread among all. Some of the companies did not pay full attention to the safety of their workers. This some times led to accidents, resulting in loss of life. If adequate attention was paid, loss of life could be avoided and it would also reduce the unnecessary work pressure on the team leader at a project site, he said. Talking about the role of safety engineers in a construction site, J. Ganguly, executive vice-president, L&T, ECC, Chennai, said the safety engineer was an integral part of a team. He should collect information and communicate it everyone properly. Workplace safety could be effective only if it became part of the system, said Nalini Krishnan, Director, The Hindu. Many large-scale industries had achieved the required standards as part of their systems management, TQM or by means of ISO certifications. StandardsWhatever be the motivation or compulsions, there were some excellent examples of industries with safety standards, she said. These examples should not only be showcased, but the knowledge and expertise should be shared with less informed industries, she added.
