Rare chance: Students trying their hands at laptop during a programme in Tirunelveli on Saturday.

TIRUNELVELI: The 500-odd visitors, who tried their hands at the laptops displayed by Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu at the Collectorate here on Saturday as part of the ‘Student Notebook Computer Scheme’, were quite amazed at their performance and the highly discounted price.

The demonstration was conducted by the ELCOT with the objective of giving a clear idea about the laptops to the prospective buyers, particularly students.

The Acer Travelmate laptops to be sold by the ELCOT are made available at Rs.29,429 and Rs.31,717 with three years international warranty.

The workstations will have Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 1.8 GHz T 5670 processor / 2 MB Cache / 800 Mhz FSB, 320 GB Hard Disk (160 GB Hard Disk in the Rs.29,429 laptop), 2 GB RAM (1 GB RAM in the Rs.29,429 system), 15.4” extra bright TFT Monitor, Gegabite Ethernet, Wireless Bluetooth, Firewire, SD Card and DVD Writer.

Operating system in these laptops is Suse Enterprise Linux and it will have a range of useful software like Netbeans 6, Psotgre SQL, MySQL, Jboss, Jasper Report, QT Designer, Typing Tutor, Openoffice Writer, Openoffice.Calc, Openoffice Impress, Virtual Box etc.

Since this offer is open for students, government officials, journalists, personnel with armed forces and ex-servicemen till July 31, prospective buyers visited the demo hall in the third floor of the Collectorate after the programme was formally inaugurated by Collector (In-Charge) G. Srinivasan.

“We had eight online registrations – five students and a journalist, a government employee and an ex-serviceman from Tuticorin – during the demonstration and we expect more registrations in the next few days as the visitors were quite satisfied with the performance of the laptops being offered by ELCOT,” said the organisation’s manager for Tirunelveli District, Chandra.

Since it will take 30 to 40 days for the ELCOT to supply the laptops to the applicants, the Government of Tamil Nadu Undertaking has planned to conduct a one-day training programme at the Collectorate for the benefit of the laptop buyers to explain the functioning and special features of the workstation. “Moreover, the training programme will also clear the doubts of the laptop buyers,” Ms. Chandra said.

One of the visitors, owing a showroom at Tirunelveli Junction that sells personal computers, computer peripherals and laptops, said the laptop models being marketed by ELCOT would be certainly Rs. 9,000 less than the market price.
