Stalin to inspect works today

Scheme will serve three districts

RAMANATHAPURAM: A significant portion of engineering works costing Rs. 248.65 crore have been completed under the Rs.616-crore Ramanathapuram Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme, according to a report prepared by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board.

The report is to be submitted to Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday when he is scheduled to inspect the works here. It has been envisaged to provide water supply to five municipalities, 11 town panchayats and 3,163 rural habitations in Pudukottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathpuram districts from the Cauvery. It will benefit the present population of 15,75,682 and a projected population of 19,75,731 in 2036.

It has been proposed to draw 100 MLD of sub surface water from the Cauvery through four collection wells to be dug at Kadiyakurichi and Mutharasanallur in Cauvery basin. In the four collection wells, side wall works have been completed in two of them for a depth of 18.8m and 20.9 m respectively. Work in the other two wells is in progress.

In the 759.144-km transmission main channel, work has been completed up to 467.067 km. Similarly, in the feeder main channel, to the length of 4613.405 km, work is over on 3175.88 km.

Engineers have found the soil in the coastal areas where the transmission main alignment pipes are to be laid to be corrosive in nature. Hence, the soil was tested at the National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi and anti-corrosive chemicals have been coated on the pipes as per suggestions made by the Central Electrochemical Research Institute at Karaikudi.
