Bangalore: “The Forum of Former Vice-Chancellors of Karnataka State Universities needs to become a platform that will take stock of the latest developments in the field of higher education. Its deliberations and recommendations ought to help the authorities concerned in formulating policies for stepping up excellence in academics,” said Governor Rameshwar Thakur. He was speaking after launching the forum, here on Friday. Mr. Thakur said the “coming together of leaders of the academic community” would go a long way in shaping the future of higher education in the State. “Universal education has to be achieved both qualitatively and quantitatively. With your rich and varied experience in the field, I hope you will be willing to lend your services in this regard,” he told the former Vice-Chancellors who had gathered on the occasion. He also said that value-based education was the crying need of the hour. Universities, as centres of learning, should come up with a concrete plan of action, so that students learnt certain values and virtues, he added. N.R. Shetty, president of the forum, said that education was an important input for the growth of society. He said that the forum was formed with an aim to deliberate issues of education pertaining to health, agriculture, technology and other relevant sectors in the State as well as in the country. M. Muniyamma, secretary of the forum; K. Balaveera Reddy, M.S. Thimmappa, executive committee members, and many former Vice-Chancellors were present.
