CHENNAI: “He blocked — that’s counted as a shot — and then passed to his partner. He got it back — three — and then one more shot. That’s four shots,” contended Tilkan Shashidhar, walking off Court 2, disgruntled. Shashidhar and Mohammad Jamiluddin had just lost a hard-fought match against the Thai pair of Sataporn Sawangreung and Yungtin 27-25 in the decisive second set. This, their second loss, meant that Shashidhar and Jamiluddin were out of the BSNL-FIVB Chennai Challenger beach volleyball, having earlier lost their first round match. The disputed point, had it gone in the Indian team’s favour, would have won it the set and taken the match into a third set. Having lost the first set 21-14, Shashidhar and Jamiluddin sparked to life in the second. The Thais were relentless, however, and Sawangreung ended the match spectacularly. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Shun Thing and Iswari from Malaysia pushed Austria’s Gabriele Pemmer and Elisabeth Klopf all the way on Centre Court before losing 21-12, 17-21, 15-11. The results: Women: Second round: Sannok & Tenpaksee (Tha) bt Radarong & Udomchavee (Tha) 21-12, 21-19; Pemmer & Klopf (Aut) bt Shun Thing & Iswari (Mal) 21-12, 17-21, 15-1; Kulna & Phokongploy (Tha) bt Brown & Turner (GBr) 21-8, 21-12; Gschweidl & Hansel (Aut) bt Zur & Rodriguez (Isr) 26-28, 21-12, 15-7.
