Tributes paid to Alladi Ramakrishnan

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tributes were paid to Prof. Alladi Ramakrishnan, founder of Institute of Mathematical Sciences and mathematical sciences scholar, by speakers at a meeting to condole his death.

Narrating some anecdotes from his father’s life, Prof. Krishnaswamy Alladi, University of Florida, Gainsville, US, said that his father had believed in giving fundamental ideas to students. Scholars and researchers used to visit his house, ‘Ekambara Nivas,’ where he used to organise programmes during his retired life.

He believed in encouraging students on mathematical sciences and sent invitations to various colleges in the city whenever he organised a programme. Similarly, he had never hesitated to share his ideas with other scientists. Whenever a student or a scientist came with a new idea, he appreciated and encouraged such efforts, Prof Krishnaswamy Alladi recalled.

M.S.Swaminathan, noted agricultural scientist, said whenever he found a solution to a mathematical problem, Prof. Alladi Ramakrishnan used to share it with him. The Foundation had lost one of its great friends and a well wisher, Dr. Swaminathan added.
