Officials and elected representatives briefing Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan about the upcoming facilities at Chromepet GH on Friday.— CHENNAI: A new Accident and Emergency Care Centre at Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital, known as Chromepet GH, will be opened on July 26, Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan said on Friday. Talking to reporters after inspecting the construction work at the hospital, he said Rs.2.25 crore, which included Rs.1.50 crore as subsidy from the Centre, had been allotted for the works and purchase of medical equipment. Apart from the 10-bed centre, a fully equipped intensive care unit and two operation theatres would be opened soon, he said. Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu and Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam are scheduled to participate in the inauguration of the centre, he said. On shortage of doctors and para medical staff at the Chromepet GH, Mr. Anbarasan said more personnel to handle accident victims would be appointed soon. The upcoming facility would be crucial as the hospital received a large of number of accident cases. Accident victims from far off places such as Peerkankaranai and Vandalur are brought to the hospital, which is located on Grand Southern Trunk Road near the MIT Bridge. It is the only government hospital in the area. Underscoring the need for more doctors and para medical staff at the hospital, sources at Chromepet GH said it was necessary in view of the number of accidents reported on GST Road, particularly the stretches between Irumbuliyur and Tambaram bus terminus and Sanatorium to Pallavaram. Doctors and para medical staff at the hospital also had to attend to patients at public health centres in nearby localities, the sources said. Director Medical Services S. Vasantha, Joint Director of Health Services (Kancheepuram district) Vijaya Duraiswamy, Chief Medical Officer of Chromepet GH Y. Muthuramalingam and Pallavaram Municipal Chairman E. Karunanidhi were present.
