Van cleaner, who was summoned for questioning in an attack case, dies while undergoing treatment

HYDERABAD: A van cleaner, who was summoned for questioning in an attack case, died after jumping from the second floor of Momenpet police station building in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, the police said on Thursday.

Ibrahim, 35, was summoned to the police station by the SI Ramana Reddy on Wednesday evening following a complaint by an autorickshaw driver Raju stating that the former damaged his three-wheeler following an altercation. According to Vikarabad DSP G. Raghava Reddy, Ibrahim was brought to the police station around 6 p.m. He was asked to sit in a room on the ground floor after being questioned for some time. “Thirty minutes later, Ibrahim went up the second floor and jumped down. Probably, he was scared of facing a criminal case,” the DSP said. The van cleaner had a fracture on his left hand and suffered injuries on his spine also. He was rushed to the Vikarabad Government Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment. The DSP assured that a magisterial inquiry into the van cleaner’s death would be conducted as per section 176 of Criminal Procedure Code. Asked if the victim was in police custody, Mr. Reddy replied in the negative stating that no case was registered when Ibrahim was brought to the police station.

As per Raju’s complaint, the case was non-cognizable and permission of a court was required to register a case.
