Tiruchi
Honour: Former District Governor, Rotary International, Rajadurai G. Michael, centre, presenting the citation to M.S. Ashraf, vice-president, Tamil Nadu Medical Council in Tiruchi on Thursday. TIRUCHI: “An ardent promoter of unity and service among medical fraternity, who finds happiness and fulfilment in serving people... With his genial nature, unassuming behaviour and cordial relationships, he has endeared himself to the people of Tiruchi...” Read thus the citation of B. C. Roy Award instituted by Central Government of India conferred on M.S. Ashraf, vice-president of Tamil Nadu Medical Council of India. The citation was read out at the function, organised by a whole lot of voluntary organisations, medical institutions and city bigwigs, to felicitate him on receiving the prestigious award for his contributions to the medical field. “His approach towards patients has earned him scores of friends. As a compassionate doctor, he has carved a niche for himself,” said the Founder of Kalai Kaveri College of Fine Arts Fr. S. M. George Adigalar. The president of Tiruchi Indian Medical Association (IMA) G. Gopalakrishnan, president-elect IMA, State Branch, R. Gunasekaran, S. Gnanathilagan and Director of Dr. Rajamanikkanar Centre for Historical Research and Presentation R. Kalaikkovan extolled his hard work, organising capacity, social services and handling of patients. They turned nostalgic when narrating their experience in working along with Dr. Ashraf and reminiscing projects of IMAs conducted through his help. Choked with emotion, Dr. Ashraf, in his acceptance speech, dedicated the award to the people and medical fraternity of Tiruchi. On the health scenario of the country, he said a revolution has taken place in controlling many communicable diseases and eradicating few fatal diseases. But the health conditions in rural areas still remain dismal. Poor access to health, sanitation and quality of drinking water posed a great threat to the development of the country. While the urban areas have witnessed tremendous development in infrastructural facilities, medical centres in over two lakh villages lack even the basic amenities. The indicators of declining health in those areas must be taken seriously and doctors, voluntary organisations and NGOs must come forward to adopt villages. The adopted villages must be provided with basic medical and educational facilities. Medical treatments must be taken care of and followed up systematically. Comprehensive adoption of villages must become a social commitment to all organisations. As an active member in medical associations, Dr. Ashraf felt that the contribution of doctors to the country have not been recognised on a par with many other sectors. “I still feel doctors, despite all the prevailing diseases, have given a healthy shape to the country.” Dr. Ashraf concluded his speech with a heart-rending slide show on shocking disparities existing between under-developed and developed countries. Former District Governor, Rotary International, Rajadurai G. Michael, presented the citation to the B.C. Roy awardee.
