HYDERABAD: The Asian Hockey Federation will organise the first-ever Asian Champions Trophy featuring the top four teams of the Asia Cup, according to P. Alagendra, secretary-general of AHF. Briefing media after the 49th AHF Council deliberations here on Thursday, the AHF official said that this was part of the overall efforts to ensure quality hockey, provide exposure and increase interest amongst the players. According to the calendar finalised, some of the big events include the following: 3rd AHF Junior Women’s Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur from December 13 to 21 (2008); 2nd Asia Cup for boys under-18 years in Delhi (2008); 3rd Asian Indoor Championship in Vietnam (2009); Junior Women’s World Cup in Boston (August 4 to 16, 2009); Junior World Cup for men in Singapore (June 7-21, 2009). Alagendra also said that during the Beijing Olympics next month, the FIH will decide whether only the winner or both the finalists of the on-going Junior Asia Cup will be qualifying for the next World Cup (since there is proposal to increase the number of teams to 20 in the World Cup).
